Why You Should Schedule Your Denver Senior Portraits Session Before School Starts
Let Me Tell You a Little Story…
A while back, I had a senior reach out excited to plan a mountain session for a denver senior portraits client. The idea was dreamy: golden aspens, alpine breeze, and those Colorado peaks doing their thing. We aimed for early September to catch the color, but life had other plans. We had to reschedule due to multiple hiccups, and by the time we finally shot the session in early October, it was raining, the daylight was tight, and the images barely squeaked in before their school’s yearbook deadline.
Here’s the thing: senior photos should never feel like a last-minute scramble. Yet every year, those September weekends disappear faster than you can say “college applications,” and families are left trying to squeeze big moments into an already overloaded calendar.
So if your senior has their heart set on a specific location, or you just want the process to feel relaxed and fun (as it should!), I can’t stress this enough: schedule early. Like… summer early.
The Fall Planning Crunch Is Real
I get it. Between enjoying summer break and prepping for senior year, photos may fall low on the to-do list. But let’s all take a collective breath and acknowledge something here: the start of senior year is a whirlwind.
Think:
- AP\IB classes
- Fall sports
- College visits
- Essays
- After school jobs
- Oh, and yes – that looming yearbook deadline
Add in my fall calendar, which fills with family sessions weeks in advance, and suddenly we’re all stuck searching for time that doesn’t exist. Senior portraits are important, and they deserve better than a rushed, wet, squeezed-in session. Worse, waiting too long might mean missing your school’s yearbook deadline altogether.
This is why I gently (okay, firmly) tell my senior families: plan your denver senior portraits session for June, July, or early August if you can.
Why Summer Senior Portraits Make Everything Easier
1. Better Weather, More Flexibility
The light is glorious, the wildflowers are out, and most seniors are at peak relaxation (which makes my job so much easier). It’s also the most flexible window for planning:
- No school-day time constraints
- Room to reschedule if needed
- Sunset sessions run later, giving us more time to soak it in
2. More Possibilities for Dream Locations
Want mountain views? A session in your family’s favorite park? These spots get packed in fall, both with tourists and photographers. Shooting earlier allows us to beat the rush and get beautiful, crowd-free backdrops without fighting the chaos.
Have a location in mind? Amazing. Let’s not wait until October to find it’s booked or under construction.
3. Less Stress for Everyone (Especially You, Mom)
I work with a lot of amazing, thoughtful parents who manage insanely full calendars. Here’s something I’ve noticed: when we wrap senior portraits before the school bell rings, you start the year with one big thing already checked off. That alone makes it worth it.
Plus, seniors tend to feel more relaxed and confident in summer. We get to create images that reflect them – full of energy, personality, and zero school stress.
4. More Time to Turn Around Your Gallery
It takes up to three weeks for me to deliver edited images, and some schools close the yearbook portal by late October. If you’re hoping to order prints, grad announcements, or custom art, the extra turnaround time is pure gold. And let’s be real: you’ll want these images to take your breath away.
Your Senior Year Deserves to Start Off Right
Denver senior portraits are one of those rare touchpoints in life where you really get to stop, celebrate, and reflect on how far you’ve come. It’s about more than checking a box. It’s about honoring this moment – both for your senior and for you.
Planning ahead creates space for that celebration to unfold naturally instead of being something you “just have to get done.” And I promise, the experience itself can be as memorable as the portraits we create.
